Bartering with businesses. Is cash necessary in a bad economy?

During the current recession and the worries about job security, does bartering become a viable alternative for getting the products you want? Should retail businesses start accepting fair trades without cash changing hands?

Well, I can't deny that cash is dear to my heart. But in
reality, I find myself outgrowing things that I bought not too long
ago and I am sure, if bartering is more widely accepted, I can
barter them and get the full value in something else I need. 
Having to sell them for cash, I know I will always lose!!
